Join Northeastern University for a night of networking and communications industry conversation.

Dr. Carl Zangerl is the Faculty Director of Graduate Communication and Human Resource Management programs at Northeastern University. In developing a management track for the Organizational and Corporate Communication master’s program, Dr. Zangerl and student Zorana Mihic investigated the skills and competencies required of communication leaders. They will discuss the major research findings, including:

  • Review of major trends in the communication field
  • The attributes and competences in demand for communication leaders
  • Perspectives of current leaders of the communication function
  • Educational implications

You will have the opportunity to speak with Northeastern faculty, industry professionals, and alumni from the Corporate and Organizational Communication program. Food and drinks will be served (alcoholic drinks for purchase).

About The Presenter

Carl Zangerl is an Assistant Teaching Professor and the academic director of the Master of Science in Corporate and Organizational Communication program. He designs and delivers courses on Meeting Management, Communication Assessment, Communication Networks, and Foundations of Organizational Communication. He is the co-author of several articles on meeting facilitation, organizational assessment, and meeting effectiveness. He served as the VP of Professional Development for IABC Boston for three years.

Previously, Dr. Zangerl was a principal of ZHC Partners, a strategic planning and communication firm, and the director of field and executive communications at New England Financial/MetLife. Prior to a 23-year corporate career, he taught at Stanford University and Purdue University, and he was the chief of staff to the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at New York University.

As marketers, are we more concerned with saving face or saving lives? In 2016, the Canadian Yukon government retracted their “We All Need the [vitamin] D” public service campaign due to an embarrassing, unintended reference to male genitalia. Unfortunately, their scramble to save face may have put a stop to one of the most successful public campaigns in years, showing more concern for their image than results. And they’re not alone: marketers often shy away from controversial creative to protect their reputation. But what if this campaign decried smoking or drunk driving: would saving face still outweigh saving lives? For cause-based marketers especially, the stakes are high, as these decisions could end up hurting the very populations they’re trying to help. It’s time we understand the true cost of “playing it safe” and ask ourselves: is it worth it?

Presenter/David Lazarenko,  with nearly 20 years of marketing experience, has led successful sales and corporate responsibility campaigns for some of North America’s largest organizations. As president at Think Shift, he has challenged clients to push the envelope to further their cause, and experienced firsthand the frustration of seeing agencies choose reputation over results.

About the Presenter:

Carl Zangerl is the Faculty Director of Graduate Communication and Human Resources Management Programs at Northeastern University’s College of Professional Studies. He earned his doctorate from the University of Illinois and MPA from New York University. Dr. Zangerl has been teaching in the MS in Corporate and Organizational Communication program since 2005, including a course in communication measurement and assessment.

Prior to joining Northeastern’s faculty, he was the director of executive and field communication for New England Financial, a subsidiary of MetLife. During a 23-year career at New England Financial, he was responsible for a wide range of communication activities, from webmaster to executive speechwriter to brand manager in support of a nationwide sales force of financial advisors. He has also been active in the Boston Chapter of IABC, serving as the VP for Professional Development between 2005 and 2009.
